Tom Hanks is returning to Broadway with a new production of This World of Tomorrow. The announcement comes as the Oscar winner prepares to portray Abraham Lincoln in the upcoming film Lincoln in the Bardo.
As per a Deadline report, Hanks will reunite with Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara for the play’s Broadway run in fall 2027. The production follows their sold-out eight-week engagement at The Shed in New York in 2025.
Hanks co-wrote the play with James Glossman, and Tony Award winner Kenny Leon will direct the limited engagement. The production will take place at a Shubert theater, with the venue yet to be announced.
Tom Hanks’ time-travel story brings love & second chances to the stage
This World of Tomorrow follows Bert Allenberry, a man living in the late 21st century who travels back in time to revisit a single day at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in Queens, hoping to change his future. Through these repeated journeys, Bert discovers how the choices people make for love can shape their lives and open the door to second chances.
The play draws on short stories from Hanks’ 2017 collection, Uncommon Type. Hanks plays Bert, while O’Hara portrays Carmen, the woman he encounters during his journeys. Their performances return to the stage together after the play’s successful Off-Broadway run.
In a statement, Leon said, “I’m so excited to continue this work on this amazing new American play. There’s no time like the present to further explore this story of love and time travel from Glossman and Hanks. More than anything, I look forward to even more audiences who will have the chance to witness the onstage chemistry of Kelli O’Hara and Tom Hanks.”
Producer Brian Anthony Moreland also welcomed the move to Broadway. He described bringing the story to a wider audience as a privilege and highlighted its message about love across time. The full cast and creative team will be announced later.
Hanks last appeared on Broadway in Lucky Guy, earning a Tony Award nomination for his performance. His upcoming production will mark his first Broadway appearance in more than 14 years. He is also set to portray Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln in the Bardo, a live-action and stop-motion adaptation of George Saunders’ novel.
