Sony’s reported Spider-Woman project has a new rumor. The studio was previously rumored to have scrapped the movie.
Well-known industry insider Daniel Richtman has answered some popular questions from fans in an X post on September 7. Among several other scoops about different franchises, he made one promising claim about Sony’s potential Spider-Woman movie.
Richtman said, “No, there aren’t any unannounced live-action Spider-Man movies in development, since they canceled all the spin-offs. There are animated movies tho (Spider-Punk, Spider-Women, Venom) as well as live-action shows in development.”
When one fan noted that the supposed Spider-Women was cancelled, Richtman stated, “Still in development last I heard.”
Sony was rumored to begin developing a new Spider-Woman movie with Olivia Wilde set to direct. Previous insider reports suggested that the project was scrapped. However, the industry insider’s latest claim comes as an encouraging update.
Meanwhile, Sony has yet to make any official announcement regarding the project. So the recent report remains just a rumor.

How Spider-Woman fits into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
Spider-Woman has previously appeared in Sony’s second Spider-Verse movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as Gwen Stacy, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld. Whether Spider-Gwen will be the subject of Sony’s supposed new Spider-Woman movie remains unclear.
Additionally, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) released Madame Web in 2024, which featured Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall, the second Spider-Woman in Marvel Comics. Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson played a young Cassandra “Cassie” Webb, who, according to the comic canon, becomes the grandmother of the fourth Spider-Woman, Charlotte Witter.
Madame Web was a box-office bomb, grossing a worldwide total of $100.5 million. It also received mostly negative reviews from critics.
Meanwhile, fans are now looking forward to the third and final installment of the SSU’s Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The movie will pick up right after the cliffhanger of Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles Morales trying to save his family while trapped in an alternate universe. It arrives in theaters on June 18, 2027.
