Interview | Photographer Danny Clinch Looks Through a New Lens as TourGigs Director

A study in perpetual motion, Clinch is also working on a very special limited-edition book connecting music icons with their favorite vehicles. His 2014 book Danny Clinch: Still Moving is a collection of album and magazine covers, shots taken from the middle of concert crowds and behind the scenes, and plenty of never before seen material – especially to Pearl Jam diehards. He’s taking a more stylized leap in his next book offering, a special limited-edition project called Motor Drive – featuring musicians with their cars or motorcycles or tour bus.

“It’s wrapped in a really beautiful envelope that’s made out of the vinyl you’d find on an old ‘70s car seat,” Clinch excitedly explains. “Then the inside is gonna be a print, hand-stamped, with a foreword written by Tom Morello. I’m making 340 of them because Tom Morello has a 340 cubic inch V8 motor in his hot rod. I’m selling them for $502 because the biggest production engine in the seventies was a 502 GM motor that was made for the Cadillacs.

I’ve got Springsteen, I’ve got Eddie Vedder, I got Eddie in his jeep – it’s a beautiful photo, too. I’ve got Mark Linkus from Sparklehorse, I’ve got Neil Young, Willie Nelson on the back of his tour bus, Tom Waits is in there, Dave Grohl… it’s pretty dope. I’m super excited about it.”

There’s also the Shannon Hoon film Clinch has been working on, using the Blind Melon singer’s own film footage to compile a poignant firsthand account of the star’s life. The project is an intimate one for Danny, who befriended Hoon after Blind Melon became the first group to bring him on the road as a tour photographer in 1992. Watch a trailer for the project here.

“We don’t have a release date, but we’re hoping to have a solid rough cut in the next couple months,” Danny explains. “All shot on Shannon’s camera. It’s gonna be really unique, super interesting.”

We can’t wait. In the meantime, keep up with Danny Clinch on his official site (where you can see a trailer for his upcoming Leon Bridges film This is Home) and Instagram as well as TourGigs.
