This is What it Looks Like When 1,400 People are Told They’re Fired

Being laid off from your job sucks, but when you’re laid off alongside 1,399 of your colleagues, it becomes an event. This is what happened to air conditioning company Carrier, who told 1,400 employees in its Indianapolis plant that production would be relocated to Monterrey, Mexico, inciting a chorus of jeers and expletives.

While there will reportedly be no immediate impact upon jobs, with the move expected to begin in 2017 and conclude in 2019, the employees were understandably unhappy with the announcement and vocally expressed their disapproval.

You can watch their heated reaction, which has garnered over 600,000 views on Facebook, below:

But despite their reaction, it is nonetheless an unfortunate rarity that an employer offers its workers such a lengthy amount of time to seek other employment before announcing that they have been laid off. While it will be of little solace to Carrier's employees, who were encouraged to continue working to a high standard by the individual making the announcement (a statement which, unsurprisingly, wasn't exactly well-received), the company has released a statement saying that they "committed to ensuring that our employees are treated respectfully and to working closely with their representatives throughout this transition."

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the announcement was "without warning" and "a disappointment."
