From Punchy Parka to Tan Trench: Fall Coats That’ll Have You Covered

Depending on where you live, you might start shopping for your fall coat as soon as the sun simmers down. If you live in LA, however, coat shopping is that thing people do in other places: you might own a coat, but it’s so lightweight it’s not even worth wearing or you have no idea where it is. Or both. Yeah, probably both.

But whether you bundle up all winter long or take cover only a couple months out of the year, designers have touched down on the fact that guys want versatility and style rolled into their comfy coat. You might not have the closet space (or the budget) for three coats, so it’s crucial that you find one that takes you from day to night … and is roomy enough to accommodate whatever else is underneath.

These fall and winter coats ensure you’ll never be cold again. Well, that’s not really true. But at least you’re less likely to freeze your balls off.

Catch a Classic

When you’re facing a drizzle or a downpour, nothing has you covered like a classic trench coat. Grab one in a neutral color – tan, black or navy – and finish it off like a good boy: tie the belt in front. We found one from J. Crew that melds military and modern.

This option from REI glides on smooth over your scratchy (hopefully not) sweater. It has a removable hood in case you not feeling four. Which leads us to this warm thought: just because a jacket has a hood, doesn’t mean you have to pull it on. Unless you actually do live in Alaska, a hood is a nicety, not a necessity.

Don’t Doubt the Duffle

Designers are offering up all kinds of patterns and fabrics for the ever-popular duffle. Stick to a stable color or go ahead and tout something with a little tipsy. Either way, this coat is long on style.

This one from Scotch & Soda toggles and zips while this Gloverall duffle outs your fashion sense.

Look to Leather

Beat fall’s chill in a black or brown leather jacket that pairs perfectly with denim or your workplace trousers. Just make sure to keep the hardware in check – you don’t want to look like you’ve been zapped by zippers from neck to waist.

Pony-up with a Parka

Stop horsing around with your athletic-style zip-ups and buck-up to this trend. Despite its foolish name, a parka pulls its weight in the coat department. And the good thing about sporting this stylish stud is that it’ll never look like you’re wearing it because “your other jacket” is at the dry cleaner.

A solid place to start is with J. Crew. And then check out The North Face for a coat that quintessentially reeks of quality. It may not be high style, but it will get you through the low points of winter.
