Sydney’s Cow And The Moon Has The World’s Best Gelato

Sydney’s Cow And The Moon have been named the world’s best gelato makers, besting Australia’s popular Gelato Messina and other Italian artisans by taking out top spot in the Gelato World Tour in Rimini, Italy.

The family-run gelateria, based in Enmore, won for their inventive take on the affogato, with their Mandorla Affogato flavour ice-cream. It combines caramelised almonds sourced from Italy with single origin coffee on a Madagascan vanilla base.

Reports Good Food, the top three artisans were chosen out of 16 Australian and New Zealand competitors at the Oceania event in October last year and traveled to the finals in Italy. After placing second in Oceania last year, Cow and the Moon went on to beat 23 other finalists from around the world for the title. The competitors faced scrutiny from the technical jury, a media jury and public tastings.

Gelato Messina also competed at the event, after placing first in Oceania with their Cremino flavour – a salted caramel gelato with house made gianduia fudge, fresh meringue and crushed amaretti biscuits folded throughout.

Cronulla’s Frangipani Gelato also received a special award for their twist on the pavlova. Their gelato featured a meringue-flavoured base, passionfruit puree and meringue pieces folded throughout.

Second and third places went to two Italian teams. Francesco Mastroianni of Il Cantagalli was ranked second and Alessandro Lancierini of Gelateria Fiore, placed third at the event.
