If you thought that Sepp Blatter resigned due to football fans and the media turning against him, or maybe because he watched John Oliver’s recent dissection of him on Last Week Tonight and thought “y’know what, that guy’s right, I am a pretty awful human”, then guess again. It turns out that despite him not being one of the many high-profile FIFA employees that were arrested last week, he is still under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to a report in the New York Times, Blatter has handed in his resignation due to increased pressure applied by US authorities, with them reportedly believing that the former president of the governing body’s top lieutenant made $10 million in bank transfers that has become a key matter of investigation for the FBI. If this is found to be the case, then that would mean that Blatter has much closer ties with the scandal, with it being reported that he has therefore been advised to step down from his role in order to defend himself from potential accusations in the future.
“Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, hey hey hey, goodbye!”
Though the FBI hasn’t commented on the report, it seems that this is likely the reasoning behind Blatter’s resignation considering that only a few mere days ago he was standing for election in FIFA once again, with him being reassigned as FIFA president in the midst of the corruption scandal. While many were up in arms about Blatter being handed the role of FIFA president once again, his fourth term in power has been brought to an end rather swiftly, which we can only presume is due to the FBI being hot on his tail.
It seems incredibly unlikely that Blatter would be completely innocent while many of his close colleagues have been found guilty of corruption, so him stepping down from his role as FIFA president is likely him attempting some damage limitation. Given Blatter’s past indiscretions, I hope that it doesn’t work and, if he is found guilty of any crimes during his time with FIFA, he’ll face the full might of the law.
