The X-Men TV Retrospective

Tonight, X-Men: Days of Future Past will storm into theatres with an anticipated opening weekend of over 100 million dollars. With an all-star cast from the original X-Men film trilogy and X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past has a real shot at becoming the highest grossing X-Men movie of all time.

But if you rewind 14 years, you may recall that the X-Men weren’t always the bankable franchise that it’s become. Marvel’s X-Men became a top selling comic book series during the ‘80s, but the characters were largely unknown to the general public until “X-Men: The Animated Series” debuted on Fox in 1992. Eight years later, Fox released the first X-Men film into theaters and it helped kick off the modern era of superhero movies.

Among Marvel properties, X-Men has had the rare distinction of having seven projects developed for TV including animation and live action. Some of them stand as Marvel’s greatest success stories on television. And a few of the others have been rightfully buried and forgotten.

To mark the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past, we’re looking back at the entire history of the X-Men on TV. These mutant superheroes didn’t always have the easiest path to superstardom, but the film franchise probably would have never happened without the early TV adaptations.
