NYCC 2013: ‘The Walking Dead’ Panel Report

On Friday, CraveOnline’s Iann Robinson wrote a list of 10 Characters We Want To See In ‘The Walking Dead.’ And topping the list was Abraham Ford, one of the most Alpha male characters ever featured in The Walking Dead comic book series.

During “The Walking Dead” panel at this year’s New York Comic-Con, that wish came true. Michael Cudlitz (“Southland”) appeared in the crowd as a belligerent fan who demanded that Abraham be featured in the show moments before he was announced to have been cast in the role.

Joining Cudlitz will be the previously announced Christian Serratos as Rosita Espinosa and the newly announced Josh McDermott as Eugene Porter, a highly intelligent man who makes a surprising declaration about the zombie apocalypse in the comic book series. Long time “Walking Dead” readers may notice that the trio are slated to show up much sooner on the TV show than they did in the comic. However, that may also be due to the accelerated pace of the television series. Their debut episode is expected to occur near the middle of the season.

TVLine was the first to publish an image of Cudlitz as Abraham, as seen in the picture above.

NYCC 2013: The Walking Dead Panel

Getting back to the NYCC panel, “Community” star Yvette Nicole Brown moderated the event with cast members Andrew Lincoln, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Norman Reedus, Chad L. Coleman and Steven Yeun. “The Walking Dead” executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and new showrunner, Scott M. Gimple were also on hand.

A few clips from the new season were shown, including a scene in which Michonne laughed at a joke about Daryl’s job before the zombie apocalypse. Later in the panel, a much more intense scene was shown in which Daryl, Tyreese, Michone and Bob (Larry Gilliard, Jr.) find themselves trapped in a car and surrounded by a herd of Walkers.

Regarding Michonne’s new found sense of humor, Gurira acknowledged that Michonne is opening up emotionally. However, she argued that Michonne’s emotional intensity was more powerful when she was silent.

Brown and Reedus heavily endorsed the idea of Rick and Michonne becoming a couple; which seemed to slightly embarrass their respective performers. Although Gurira noted that it was nice that fans care enough about Michonne to root for her to “get some.” Lincoln joked that former cast member, Sarah Wayne Callies would kick his ass if Rick had another relationship so soon after Lori’s death.

Kirkman reiterated that he wanted Coleman to play Tyreese even before “The Walking Dead” became a TV show. Coleman added that Kirkman’s support gave him a lot of confidence that he could portray the fan favorite character.

Lincoln praised Chandler Riggs, the young actor who plays Rick’s son, Carl. Lincoln mentioned that episode nine of season 4 will be a pivotal moment for Carl and said that Riggs would kick ass in it.

Additionally, Lincoln mentioned a script from the new season that left him unable to speak for ten minutes after he read it. Lincoln added that it’s going to be an amazing story, but he thinks that [they] may get in trouble for that episode.

“The Walking Dead” Season 4 premieres tonight, October 13 on AMC.
