Michelle Rodriguez Turns Down Female ‘Expendables’

Michelle Rodriguez, we respectfully disagree.

The recently-announced female version of The Expendables has just lost a cast member, and they haven’t even started casting yet. Michelle Rodriguez had a breakthrough role as a boxer in Karyn Kusama’s 2000 drama Girlfight and was quickly adopted as Hollywood’s badass action lady du jour. Over the last twelve years she’s kicked ass in such action movies as The Fast and the Furious, Resident Evil, S.W.A.T., Bloodrayne, Fast & Furious, Avatar, Machete, Battle Los Angeles, next weekend’s Resident Evil: Retribution and the upcoming sequel Machete Kills. But in a recent interview with Judao.com (via Latino Review), she says she won’t be doing the female Expendables because she hasn’t been in enough action movies yet.

Yes, really. Check out the clip.

Ms. Rodriguez, with all due respect, we have two points of contention. Firstly, you have one of the most impressive action resumes in Hollywood, male or female. If you’re not qualified, there aren’t many female action heroes who are. Secondly, while The Expendables 2 certainly wallowed into ridiculous parody territory, we actually think that’s to the detriment of the concept. We would hope that the female Expendables (which really needs an official title so we can stop referring to the production in such terms) aims for a superior balance of homage and actual seriousness. Sure, it can be fun, and you would certainly be playing off of your “tough woman” persona, but flooding the film with quickly dated asides won’t do the production any favors.

So in other words, if that’s the direction The Fexpendables (no, that’s not really any better), you’re right to say no. Not because you’re not qualified – you are – but because it doesn’t bode well for the finished product. But if they’re not venturing into Tropic Thunder territory, we ask you to reconsider. You’re one of the most recognizable female action stars on the planet. It won’t be the same without you.

CraveOnline will be back with more Fexpendables after they stop pretending and just change the title to Fox Force Five.
