Fast & Furious star Michelle Rodriguez opened up about her early experience in Hollywood. The actress said she once viewed Hollywood as the “devil’s world.”
Michelle Rodriguez admits she viewed Hollywood as the ‘devil’s world’ after a strict religious upbringing
Michelle Rodriguez reflected on her early Hollywood experience during the 25th-anniversary screening of the 2001 film at Directors Guild Theater in Los Angeles.
The actress exclusively told PEOPLE, “I was just getting introduced to what it is to be an actor in New York. And then I think Vin had seen Girlfight and he really liked the character and wanted that character to be his girlfriend in Fast.”
Rodriguez also discussed the culture shock she experienced when she moved from indie films to the Fast & Furious set. She added, “I came from a Jehovah’s Witness background at the time. So it’s like none of this really means anything to me. And so you’re dealing with a kid who’s not affected. I’m already playing in the so-called devil’s world in my mind as a 20-year-old, obviously.”
The Fast & Furious star also reflected on how her mindset changed as she moved into a major Hollywood production. She noted that she was making “good” money, “more than I was making before.”
“I really loved being able to get in a car, train, learn how to shoot guns, learn how to race cars. To me, that was the exciting thing. Doing things that you weren’t allowed to do in real life. Break windows, be violent, all that stuff,” Rodriguez added.
The film starred the late Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz and Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto. Despite initially viewing Hollywood as the “devil’s world,” Rodriguez found excitement and new opportunities on the Fast & Furious set.
