‘The Purge: Election Year’ Looks Like ‘White House Down’ on Drugs

Considering that the concept these Purge movies is so full of holes it would barely make sense as a Twilight Zone episode, you have to admit they’ve done pretty well for themselves.

The franchise takes place in an alternate, near future in which crime rates and dropped and the economy is soaring because of a national holiday called “The Purge,” in which just about every crime is legalized for 12 whole hours, allowing the American people to basically get all their violent and sexual urges out of their system so the rest of the year can fly by without incident. Yeah, just try passing that bill through congress.

But the first film in the Purge series was a financial success, and the second film – The Purge: Anarchy – was a legitimately awesome throwback to old school John Carpenter/Walter Hill low-budget sci-fi action classics. Say what you will but the franchise is getting more inventive and topical as it progresses, a trend that seems to continue in the newly released trailer for The Purge: Election Year.

The trailer includes all the gory goodness we’ve come to expect from these movies, but this time it’s focused on a presidential candidate (Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost), who is campaigning on a platform to end The Purge once and for all. A room full of corrupt white men in suits wants none of that, and neither do the people who love purging, so when Purge night comes around it’s basically open season on the politician, even though politicians are supposed to be off limits during the holiday (which presumably will be explained).

And since it’s up to her bodyguard, played by The Purge: Anarchy‘s Frank Grillo, to save Senator Roan, this new film basically looks like White House Down or Olympus Has Fallen on crack. We’re not going to pretend that’s a bad thing.

Check out the new trailer for The Purge: Election Year, and keep an eye out for the film’s “patriotic” release on July 1, 2016.
