Reopen the Black Lodge! After a particularly rocky road, Showtime’s revival of Twin Peaks will start production in September. Showtime President David Nevins (via Deadline) confirmed the news this morning at the Television Critics Association Press Tour and added “I want it as badly and as soon as the biggest fans in the world want it.”
It hasn’t been an easy road. After the surprise announcement of Twin Peak’s return 25 years after its cancellation, series co-creator David Lynch abruptly left the project in April after complaining about budget issues. In May, Lynch rejoined the Twin Peaks revival in May and the project was officially back.
“I never had doubt we would get him back,” said Nevins. “Twin Peaks is a huge priority for us. It became clear it would take more than nine episodes, which we had planned and budgeted for. We had to sort that out. Lynch wanted to direct all episodes, and we wanted him to direct all episodes. We are looking to be in great shape.”
Lynch and his collaborator, Mark Frost apparently wrote the Twin Peaks revival as one giant script, which will be divided up into multiple episodes. The final episode count is still undetermined.
Nailing down a release date has also been a challenge for Showtime. Nevins told the press that “I’m hoping we make 2016. It’s not clear. It’s ultimately going to be in [Lynch and Frost’s] control. They’re going to shoot the whole thing and then they’ll start posting. Bottom line is, I’ll take it when they’re ready with it … but I’m hoping sooner rather than later.”
