Mortal Kombat X Details Online Faction Wars and “Blockbuster” Story

A new trailer for Mortal Kombat X has been released that shows series creator Ed Boon and the team at NetherRealm Studios discussing the impact the iconic series has had on the gaming landscape, along with detailing the game’s Faction Wars and highlighting its story mode, which the team says is akin to a “Hollywood blockbuster.”

The trailer, which you can watch in the above video, showcases just how much the Faction Wars will impact the game’s online modes, with players selecting from one of five factions before earning points for their respective clan every day, with the results being tallied up weekly to reveal which faction outperformed the others.

Ed Boon stated that “everything you do” will affect your faction points, and a random 24 hour period of each week will see an “invasion” from another faction, such as the NetherRealm or Outworld, which will see players having to work together in order to defeat their common enemies.

It’s certainly a new direction for the fighting genre, and one which should potentially see the game boasting much more replayability for even the more casual fighting game fan, with the constant stream of faction rewards adding extra incentives to keep playing it.

However, those who played the previous Mortal Kombat game will know that it suffered from a terrible netcode upon its initial release, so hopefully that was the first thing on NetherRealm’s to-do list when it came to the development of Mortal Kombat X. If that’s the case, then we can’t see this being anything other than a stellar online fighter.
