Listen: La Roux Drops New Single ‘Uptight Downtown’

‘Uptight Downtown’ is the latest single from British singer La Roux to appear on the upcoming sophomore release Trouble In Paradise.

Elly Jackson is releasing her first album since ditching long-time La Roux member Ben Longmaid earlier in the year and proves she can drop a dance track on her own after the slightly more sombre ‘Let Me Down Gently’, released earlier in the month.

Jackson says the creation of ‘Uptight Downtown’ stemmed from the 2011 London riots.

“It’s kind of very loosely based on the London Riots which happened a few years ago now, and it’s just more the energy of the riots,” she told Triple J radio.  “I grew up in Brixton where the first riots happened… It was interesting to see people of my generation try to at least get up and stand up for what they believed in… I think it’s just the energy people would have liked to have seen from those riots and I kind of tried to turn a negative into a positive.”

‘Let Me Down Gently’ and the sing along ‘Uptight Downtown’ represent the first tastes of fresh La Roux material in a number of years. Jackson and Longmaid began making noise with their 2008 debut single ‘Quicksand’ before the success of ‘In For The Kill’ and ‘Bulletproof’ propelled them to the top of the synthpop scene.

The nine-track Trouble In Paradise is set for release on July 4 in Australia, July 7 in the UK and the 8th in the US.
