Australian commercial radio has crowned Birds Of Tokyo the band of 2013, spinning hit single ‘Lanterns’ more than 17,000 times to beat out all the other major releases of the past year.
‘Lanterns’, the second single from March Fires, received 17,400 hits in 2013 to beat out fellow top five competitors Passenger, Pink, Bastille and The Lumineers.
British singer-songerwriter Passenger came in second, just 43 plays behind Birds Of Tokyo for the ‘Let Her Go’, which has also clocked a cheeky 154 million views on YouTube.
Birds Of Tokyo likely received a bit of a boost ahead of their US counterparts due to the ‘Australian artists quota’ national broadcasters need to fulfil in order to properly promote home grown talent. ‘Royals’, the impressive chart debut from New Zealand teenager Lorde, polled at No.40, but should stick around into 2014 due to its later release.
Also featuring in the top 10- Daft Punk for the lead single ‘Get Lucky’ from their latest release Random Access Memories, Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’ and Aussie singer-songerwriter Vance Joy with ‘Riptide’.
