In what has been hailed a medical miracle, Alabama woman Kelsey Hatcher gave birth to twin daughters from two separate wombs less than a day apart from each other. Hatcher was born with an extremely rare condition called uterine didelphys, or a double uterus, which affects roughly 3 out of 1000 women. The chance that a woman with this condition is able to get pregnant in both wombs at the same time is an even rarer occurrence.

Back in 2023, Hatcher delivered two girls from two different uteruses about a week before Christmas Day, which was the original due date for the twins. She gave birth to Roxi vaginally on December 19 at 7:45 p.m. and then, after nearly an additional ten hours of labor, Rebel via cesarian section on December 20 at 6:10 a.m.
“Roxi [was born] and everybody cheered, and it was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, we did it,'” the mother recounted to Good Morning America. “And then the reality [set in] of like, ‘OK, we have to prepare for the next one.'”
Both babies were born healthy, with each weighing just over seven pounds.
Hatcher learned that she had uterine didelphys at age 17 and had gone through three other pregnancies all to full-term with no complications before having the twins. However, she carried only one baby in one uterus every time in the past. When she and her husband, Caleb, learned during an ultrasound session that they would be having twins, one in each womb, they were shocked.
“I don’t know what happened differently this time,” Caleb said, “but it’s wild.”
That said, their OB-GYN doctor, Dr. Shweta Patel, at the UAB Hospital in Birmingham had a theory on how this unusual twin pregnancy occurred. “Most likely what happened is that she ovulated separately and had one egg come down each fallopian tube, meaning coming down on each side of the uterus,” she posited, “and then sperm traveled up on each separate uterus and fertilization occurred separately.”
Still, none of the doctors had any experience delivering two babies from two distinct wombs, and had to rely on their training for a typical birth for twins.
Hatcher recalled that the delivery felt unusual at the time. She said, “As my contractions began, they were not consistently together but were within a few seconds of each other. I felt each side contracting in different areas as well. I felt one consistent with the monitor that started on the left side and moved to the right.”
