Andrew Lincoln Promises More ‘Levity’ In ‘The Walking Dead’

If you watched the first half of The Walking Dead‘s seventh season and thought “this show could use a laugh,” Andrew Lincoln agrees with you. Over the course of eight episodes, Lincoln’s Rick Grimes was a broken man forced into the service of Negan and the Saviors. But according to Lincoln, there’s a much lighter touch coming to the second half of the season.

Lincoln told Entertainment Weekly that the upcoming episodes are  “probably the opposite of what you just witnessed,” before adding “There’s a lot more levity, if you can believe that, than you’ve ever seen before in Mr. Grimes. There’s sort of a freedom in him, a feeling that comes from losing everything, and also the thrill of the fight. It’s the thrill of the fight again. He’s back in. All I’m saying is that the band is back together.”

“It certainly feels very much more like a show that I knew and recognized in the back eight,” continued Lincoln.

As fans of the comic and the TV series have probably already guessed, the second half of the season will deal with Rick’s attempts to build an alliance against Negan. And while the expectation has been that AMC will drag out the storyline for another season-and-a-half, Lincoln seemed to indicate some measure of closure ahead.

“It’s The Magnificent Seven in the back half. Rather, the magnificent eight episodes. Wait till [episode] 16. I promise you, there is one beat in 16, I dropped my script and started punching the air and did a little jig.”

The Walking Dead season 7 will resume on Sunday, February 12 on AMC.
