Calvin Harris, underwear model/sometime music producer, continues his quest to be king of summer 2016 with “Hype,” his most recent collaboration with Dizzee Rascal. A searing techno/EDM track dolled up in disco flourishes, the groove is reminiscent of late ‘80s Hip-House, only with more techno octane and not as much gritty soul flavoring. Harris sculpts the track by masterfully manipulating the space around Rascal’s voice: pulling back for minimum funk sounds, throwing in everything but the kitchen sink, and then scaling everything back again to emphasize Rascal’s rhyming, all the while dictating the energy of the dancefloor.
