Palace aide reveals how King Charles handled grueling Caribbean tour

King Charles and Queen Camilla recently completed their Caribbean tour, also known as the Autumn Tour. The monarch, who turns 78 this month, continues to undergo cancer treatment following his diagnosis in 2024. Despite his treatment, Charles reportedly maintained his stamina throughout the visit.

A senior palace aide said, “The King said, ‘I think I’m going to get involved,’ and off he went and did. At the end of it, they said, ‘Could they have the cowbells back?’ Because perhaps they might want them as a special souvenir for the next Junkanoo.”

Charles completed 40 engagements, including stops in the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda. The aide recalled Charles dancing with cowbells in temperatures approaching 40 degrees.

He said, “I think probably the best response to that is a picture of a man about to turn 78 wangling the cowbells as he jives down the street in nearly 40-degree heat. When the engagement finished, I get in the car next to him and say, ‘Crikey, I’m hot’. He says, ‘Oh, never mind.’ So no, he copes. I mean, frankly, he copes better with it than I do, and I’m younger than him” (via Hello Magazine).

The aide said Charles was born to do this kind of work and enjoys interacting with large crowds. Many people had predicted that the tour might be particularly challenging. However, Charles drew on his experience and enthusiasm to navigate the demanding schedule. During the visit, there was also intense debate over Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade and the future of the Commonwealth Games.

Reflecting on the tour, the aide said, “This has been a complex visit. It’s been challenging. It’s been exhausting… But the takeaway, in the round, is that it’s been very successful, and I think the King has demonstrated his statecraft both by word and deed.” He added that Charles and Camilla’s interactions with the public had been warm and that crowds had welcomed them throughout the visit.
