Stranger Things is expanding again following the conclusion of its original series. Netflix has announced a new prequel titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. The project will take viewers decades before the events in Hawkins, introducing a new setting and characters.
The Duffer Brothers expand the Netflix universe with Other Worlds
The Duffer Brothers created the series alongside longtime franchise writer Kate Trefry. Set in 1955, the story unfolds in Marion, Nevada. Netflix plans to premiere the series in 2028.
The announcement arrived on Stranger Things Day, Nov. 6, alongside a brief teaser. The footage features a boom box playing the 1950s song “Sh-Boom (Life Could Be a Dream)” by The Chords. The camera then reveals a cloudy sky before a thunderous crack interrupts the scene.
A title card identifies the setting as April 19, 1955, in Marion. The sky appears to split open, hinting at another supernatural mystery. Netflix has not revealed further story details or confirmed how the new setting connects to Hawkins.
Kate Trefry will serve as co-creator, showrunner and executive producer. She previously wrote for the original series and penned Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Trefry said the team enjoyed revisiting the franchise’s horror, wonder and mystery.
“There are so many more mysteries to explore,” Trefry said. The Duffer Brothers also described the project as a longtime dream and promised a fresh story featuring new heroes and villains.
Joe Wright will direct the prequel’s first three episodes. The filmmaker previously directed Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour. Shawn Levy will executive produce through his production company, 21 Laps.
The Duffers will also executive produce through Upside Down Pictures. Netflix executive Jinny Howe praised the new series’ characters and emotional appeal. Levy added that its mythology would explore worlds beyond the familiar Hawkins setting.
The new project adds another chapter to the growing Stranger Things franchise. The original series debuted on Netflix in 2016 and became a global phenomenon. Netflix has since expanded the property through the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
Its stage production, live experiences and books have further extended the franchise. Other Worlds will now introduce new characters, themes and mythology, taking the story beyond Hawkins. Fans can expect the prequel to arrive in 2028, although Netflix has yet to announce an exact premiere date.
