Rebecca Gayheart is reflecting on her complicated relationship with Eric Dane following the actor’s death earlier this year. Although the couple had been separated for several years, they remained committed to raising their daughters together. Now, Gayheart has opened up about their bond and why supporting him through his illness was never in question.
Rebecca Gayheart speaks out on her relationship with Eric Dane
The actress recently appeared on Maria Shriver’s Today podcast, where she discussed her personal life, her memoir, and her relationship with Dane. During the conversation, she reflected on missing him and adjusting to life without the person who had been part of her family for so many years.
Gayheart said, “I feel solo in a way that’s hard. You know, just—I don’t have that person to celebrate my daughter getting her driver’s license. I miss Eric. Like, I knew Eric deeply, and we were married for almost 15 years.”
“And, yes, we have a complex, complicated relationship that doesn’t fit into anyone’s box. But we always landed in a place of agreement that we were a family and that we wanted our kids to have two parents who didn’t hate each other,” she added.
During the podcast, someone also asked the 55-year-old how she became Dane’s caregiver while he battled ALS. The question focused particularly on their complicated relationship. Gayheart became emotional as she explained why supporting him felt natural despite their separation.
She said, “We were together for so long. We created two beautiful daughters. We had been separated for a while. He had other girlfriends, and, you know, I dated someone, but it just wasn’t even a question. Of course, we were going to be there as a family to help him go through this.”
Gayheart and Dane married in October 2004 and shared two daughters, Billie and Georgia. Gayheart filed for divorce in February 2018, but neither finalized the proceedings. She requested that the court dismiss the divorce petition in March 2025, and both agreed to dismiss it.
Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died on February 19, 2026, at age 53, following his battle with ALS. Gayheart had continued to support him during his illness, helping manage his care and remaining present for their family.
