Kelly Ripa revealed that she had a “big fight” with the Live With Kelly and Mark production team over a topic selected for the show’s opening discussion. The disagreement centered on Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year, “maxxing,” which she felt was not worth discussing.
During Tuesday’s broadcast, the 56-year-old host expressed her frustration and explained why she would not have chosen the word.
Kelly Ripa disagreed with producers over Dictionary.com’s word of the year, “maxxing”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Ripa revealed that she and the crew had a disagreement backstage before the show began. “Do you want to hear about the word of the year, everybody? We had a big fight backstage,” she said. “Oh, we had quite a fight.”
She made it clear that “maxxing” would not have been her choice. When an audience member reacted with surprise, Ripa replied, “Correct, thank you,” before explaining the term using its popular variation, “looksmaxxing.” She also turned to producer Michael Gelman and pointed out that the audience was unfamiliar with the word, just as she had predicted.
Dictionary.com defines “maxxing” as the practice of pursuing an activity to the fullest or optimising an aspect of one’s life. Its common variation, “looksmaxxing,” refers to improving one’s physical appearance.
Consuelos initially called looksmaxxing “stupid” and suggested people “should probably do less of that.” However, after hearing other variations, including “softmaxxing,” “hardmaxxing,” and “sleepmaxxing,” he warmed to the term. He even admitted, “I kind of like it now!” when the discussion turned to “proteinmaxxing” at the gym.
The host, however, remained unimpressed. As the segment wrapped up, she joked about the audience losing interest, saying, “Everybody-checked-outmaxxing.” She added, “I just watched an entire audience of people go to sleepmaxxing.”
The term has also been associated with toxic male communities online and controversial influencer and model Clavicular. He offers online courses focused on looksmaxxing. Live With Kelly and Mark airs weekdays in syndication.
