Billionaire J.K. Rowling Lectures the World About Elitism in Latest Tirade

J.K. Rowling has returned to one of the most divisive debates surrounding her public life. The Harry Potter author published a new essay defending her long-held views on sex and gender. This time, Rowling argues that modern transgender activism is driven by elites and insulated from concerns she says affect ordinary women. The comments come as the billionaire author continues funding legal efforts tied to sex-based rights.

The Harry Potter author attacks transgender activism in another controversial essay

Rowling published the essay on Oct. 21, six years after her widely discussed 2020 statement. In the update, she said her views “haven’t changed” and described 21st-century transgender activism as “elitist to its core.”

She argued that the movement grew within academic and cultural institutions before spreading into government, corporations, and other organizations. Rowling also claimed that wealthier women are often shielded from consequences she associates with policies involving single-sex spaces.

That point may draw added attention because Rowling herself is extraordinarily wealthy. Forbes currently estimates her fortune at about $1.2 billion. However, Rowling wrote that her current wealth does not erase her past experiences with poverty or abuse.

The author also stressed that she does not believe transgender people should face discrimination in housing or employment. She acknowledged that some trans people are vulnerable and said they should not be denied personal safety or human rights.

Still, Rowling continued to oppose policies allowing transgender women access to certain female-only spaces. She linked those concerns to the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, which supports legal cases involving women’s sex-based rights.

Her position continues to attract strong criticism. The Matrix filmmaker Lilly Wachowski recently criticized Rowling and the upcoming Harry Potter series, arguing that money generated by the franchise helps support causes Rowling funds.

Rowling has repeatedly rejected claims that her views are anti-trans. Meanwhile, LGBTQ advocates and several Harry Potter actors have publicly disagreed with her positions.

Despite the continuing backlash, Rowling ended her latest essay by making clear that she plans to continue speaking publicly and funding legal efforts connected to the issue.
