J.K. Rowling is back in the spotlight with a new documentary TV show. The two-part series will explore the controversial author’s legacy and political beliefs.
The BBC has announced a docuseries about Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, produced by Rogan Scotland. According to the official press release, the series, titled “J.K. Rowling,” will center on the author’s “dramatic rise, cultural influence and contested legacy, using her life as a lens through which to explore three decades of profound social, political and technological change.”
Rowling herself will not participate in the documentary. The series will draw from archival footage, her work, and interviews with her associates and collaborators.
J.K. Rowling’s controversial legacy at the focus of the documentary
J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series began in 1997 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The franchise has since grown into a global pop culture phenomenon, inspiring a successful film series, theme parks, video games, and an upcoming HBO Max TV show.
Amid this towering legacy, Rowling has recently sparked significant controversy with her anti-trans remarks and political views. The upcoming documentary will explore how the writer became what the press release describes as “one of Britain’s most polarizing public figures.” The second episode will follow Rowling “as she steps out from behind her creation and becomes an increasingly powerful political voice.”
The release further adds, “Admired by supporters as a fearless defender of women’s rights and condemned by critics who call her an opponent of trans equality, she finds herself divided from some of the actors and fans who once championed her work.”
The announcement of the J.K. Rowling docuseries comes just ahead of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot series this Christmas, which promises a faithful adaptation of the novels.
The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, alongside Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Other cast members include John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, and more.
