The Rock appeared to back criticism of Pat McAfee after a social media post questioned his Trump ties. Dwayne Johnson’s apparent like added intrigue to a debate about celebrity neutrality and political accountability.
The interaction followed McAfee’s appearance beside Donald Trump at the Patriot Games in Geneva, Ohio. Critics argued that the moment challenged McAfee’s repeated claim that he remained outside politics.
Dwayne Johnson liked a post criticizing Pat McAfee’s political accountability and relations with Donald Trump
The post came from Instagram account @lukethomasgetspolitical and targeted McAfee’s relationship with Trump. Its message argued that proximity to political power carried political meaning.
The post stated, “Pat McAfee wants the access and prestige that comes with proximity to Trump, but not the political accountability.” It continued, “You cannot lend your popularity to power and then pretend everyone else is unreasonable for noticing.”
The Instagram interaction attracted attention because Johnson recently faced similar questions. He had discussed stepping away from political labels while expressing frustration with America’s political division in an interview with Esquire.
Johnson said he planned to keep his personal voting preferences private. Critics called that approach “spineless,” while supporters defended his right to privacy.
McAfee faced scrutiny after attending the Patriot Games with Trump. Critics questioned his presence despite his “not a political person” stance. McAfee greeted Trump on the tarmac, walked beside him, and spent hours in the VIP section.
Mike Ryan Ruiz, a producer for The Dan Le Batard Show, accused McAfee of acting as a “pawn” for Trump. The criticism framed McAfee’s participation as reputation-building for the president.
McAfee offered a different explanation on The Pat McAfee Show. He said the event celebrated student-athletes and promoted scholarship opportunities.
The broadcaster acknowledged that politics remained deeply polarizing among his audience. Still, he argued that the Patriot Games crossed partisan lines.
