Pat McAfee Gets Heat Over His Patriots Games With Donald Trump

Pat McAfee is facing fresh heat after spending time with Donald Trump at the 2026 Patriot Games in Ohio. The ESPN host says he went to support young athletes. Still, some fans think the appearance clashes with his past comments about staying out of politics.

Pat McAfee’s latest Donald Trump appearance has some fans questioning his political stance

McAfee greeted Trump when the president arrived in Cleveland on August 11. A video shared by CBS News showed them meeting on the tarmac. They later attended the Patriot Games finals at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, and sat together during the event.

The 2026 Patriot Games brought high school athletes from across the country together. Freedom 250 says competitors were ages 14 to 17. The top male and female champions split a $250,000 scholarship pool.

McAfee later shared photos from the event on X. He said he had “a blast” celebrating the students with leaders from Disney, ABC and ESPN, as well as Trump. He also praised the push to keep young people active.

That did not stop the Pat McAfee backlash. Some fans pointed to his past claim that he is “not a political person.” McAfee made that remark in a September 2025 X post.

The new Pat McAfee controversy centers on whether his time with Trump fits those earlier Pat McAfee political comments. McAfee answered the criticism on August 12. He said he was there to promote active students who could win life-changing scholarship money.

McAfee’s reply came after an X user asked whether it was time to “cancel” him. He did not back away from the event. Instead, he stressed its sports and scholarship focus.

For critics, the Donald Trump Patriot Games appearance revived an old question about McAfee’s public stance. Yet McAfee has not called the August 11 appearance a political endorsement. His own posts focused on the athletes and the event.

Trump first announced the Patriot Games as part of plans for America’s 250th anniversary. The White House described the event as a national youth sports contest involving athletes from across the country. McAfee has also met Trump in public before. He interviewed the president on his ESPN show on Veterans Day in 2025.

For now, the Pat McAfee backlash is about what some fans think the appearance means. McAfee, however, says his goal was to support the athletes.
