Donald Trump said he prefers the BBC over ABC, despite suing the broadcaster for $10 billion in damages. Trump made the comments on August 2 while speaking to reporters about his proposed fund and economic discussions involving Japan’s currency.

While speaking with reporters on Air Force One, the president asked a journalist, as stated by OK! Magazine, “Who are you with?” The reporter responded, “I’m with ABC.” Trump said, “BBC?” The journalist identified themselves as an ABC reporter. The president replied, “Oh, that’s worse. I like BBC better.”
The comment came amid a multibillion-dollar lawsuit Trump filed against the BBC. He filed the lawsuit over a 2024 documentary that covered the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
The legal dispute centers on an episode of the BBC’s flagship current affairs show, Panorama, titled Trump: A Second Chance. The episode aired shortly before the 2024 presidential election, which Trump won, reports Sky News. The program included footage of Trump speaking to supporters on the day of the Capitol attack in Washington, D.C., following his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.
BBC director-general Tim Davie resigned amid the controversy, while chairman Samir Shah apologized for an “error of judgment.” The BBC later admitted the program’s editing created “the impression of a direct call for violent action.”
Trump filed a lawsuit in Florida seeking $10 billion in damages. The claim includes $5 billion for alleged defamation and another $5 billion for allegedly violating Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
On July 17, Trump agreed to remove two BBC divisions from the lawsuit after it was shown they had no role in the episode. However, he continues to pursue the case against the BBC. The lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in early 2027.
