Katie Zacharia’s tenure as White House press secretary is reportedly ending after just five days. The 41-year-old conservative commentator’s exit follows Donald Trump’s remarks that he had told her to reconsider the role.
Donald Trump reportedly questions Katie Zacharia’s future as White House press secretary
According to CNN, Trump spoke to Zacharia, who was appointed on October 9, on the morning of October 16 and advised her to reconsider her position. He said they would speak again after he returned to the White House, but he would leave the decision up to her. “Honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider,” he told her. “Katie, do you need this? I don’t think you need this.”
As he left the White House to attend a political rally in Georgia, Trump addressed the situation surrounding Zacharia. He said the media had treated her unfairly. He also described her as a loyal supporter. Despite praising Zacharia, Trump expressed doubts about her suitability for the position. He said Zacharia might not be suited to represent the government as its top spokesperson. “Maybe it’s not for her,” he admitted.
Zacharia’s brief stint lasted only five days, breaking the previous record for the shortest tenure in the role. Anthony Scaramucci held the record after serving as Trump’s White House communications director for 11 days in 2017.
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011 and was a former Department of Homeland Security spokesperson. Drawing on her experience in Republican politics and conservative media, she was expected to communicate the administration’s stance on key issues amid ongoing political challenges.
However, her first press briefing quickly attracted attention after she made an awkward verbal slip, accidentally referring to President Donald Trump as her husband. The mother of four replaced Karoline Leavitt in the high-profile role in Washington, DC.
