Donald Trump’s FIFA Peace Prize has sparked calls for changes to the award. Several FIFA council members reportedly want the organization to scrap the prize or change how it works. The debate follows criticism over FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s decision to honor the U.S. president. The award now faces an uncertain future as FIFA reviews its purpose and rules.
FIFA council members reportedly call for changes to the FIFA Peace Prize following controversy over Donald Trump
According to The Guardian, council members raised concerns about the prize during a meeting on Thursday, October 15. Some reportedly demanded that FIFA end the award, while others called for it to stay free from politics. Infantino told the council that FIFA’s social responsibility committee would review the prize. The committee must recommend a path forward before the next council meeting in Doha on December 16.
Several members reportedly believe the award has suffered because of its association with Trump. Others fear that a future recipient could cause diplomatic trouble or upset the U.S. president. FIFA’s 22-member social responsibility committee includes many representatives from countries that support Infantino. That could make scrapping the award harder, even as members acknowledge that changes are needed.
One council member told the outlet that FIFA could reshape the prize to honor people in football who promote social harmony and responsibility. Under that plan, politicians would not qualify for the award. FIFA introduced the prize in November 2025 to recognize people who take “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace.” The organization presented Trump with a golden trophy, a medal and a certificate at the men’s World Cup draw in Washington last December.
The process behind Trump’s selection has never been made public, adding to concerns about the award. FIFA’s statutes also prohibit political or government interference in football, a rule that fueled criticism of the decision. The social responsibility committee is expected to set clear rules if FIFA keeps the prize. It will also review the nomination and selection process for future winners.
