Michelle Obama is reportedly at the center of a new Hollywood controversy involving Larry David’s latest HBO project. According to a new report, the former First Lady allegedly opposed casting Cheryl Hines because of the actress’ ties to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration.
The claims have sparked fresh buzz around “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America,” a seven-episode comedy series executive produced by Michelle and Barack Obama through their Higher Ground production company. Neither Michelle Obama nor HBO has publicly addressed the allegations.

According to the Daily Mail, Cheryl Hines was left out of Larry David’s new HBO series despite starring alongside him for “12 seasons on Curb Your Enthusiasm.” The outlet cited unnamed sources who claimed Michelle Obama objected to Hines joining the cast because of her marriage to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
One insider told the Daily Mail that Hines “felt terribly hurt and emotionally injured” after missing out on the project, claiming she believed she and David would work together again after their long-running sitcom.
The same source alleged, “But banning Cheryl was a command from Michelle that Larry could not go against, even if he had wanted to,” adding, “He always respected her as an actress. But Michelle’s the boss. And you don’t cross the boss, especially a powerful anti-MAGA force like Michelle,” according to the Daily Mail.
Another unnamed source claimed Michelle’s involvement centered on casting rather than the creative direction of the show. According to the Daily Mail, the insider alleged Michelle made it clear: “No Cheryl Hines!” after discussions about bringing the actress onboard.
The publication also reported that another source claimed Michelle believed Hines’ close association with RFK Jr. and his support of President Donald Trump made her an unsuitable choice for the production. The Daily Mail further reported that representatives for Michelle Obama were contacted for comment, while Cheryl Hines declined to comment through her spokesperson.
It’s worth noting that these claims rely entirely on anonymous sources and have not been independently confirmed. HBO, Larry David, Higher Ground, and Michelle Obama have not publicly verified the allegations.
