More than 20 years after their infamous Super Bowl performance, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake are back at the center of the conversation. Jackson’s longtime fashion designer, Wayne Scot Lukas, now claims the controversial reveal happened as planned. His account challenges the long-standing description of the moment as a wardrobe malfunction. However, Lukas is offering his version of events, and neither Jackson nor Timberlake has publicly confirmed his latest claims.
Wayne Scot Lukas claims Janet Jackson’s reveal was planned
Lukas discussed the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show during an appearance on TMZ Live. He told TMZ that Jackson’s outfit functioned exactly as intended.
The designer claimed the team originally planned a different reveal involving a G-string. According to Lukas, they changed the idea a few days before the performance and instead planned for Timberlake to expose Jackson’s breast.
Lukas also claimed cameras should have immediately cut away before the screen went black. Instead, viewers saw the moment during the live broadcast. He blamed the production side for failing to execute that part of the alleged plan.
The designer said the fallout seriously hurt his career. He also claimed Timberlake never apologized to him, although Lukas said he does not need an apology now. Instead, he wants the singer to share what Lukas considers the true version of events.
TMZ noted that Jackson has maintained for years that the exposure itself was an accident. Lukas’ new account therefore adds another version to the long-running Super Bowl secret, rather than settling what happened behind the scenes.
The timing is particularly notable because Timberlake may soon revisit the controversy himself. A reported four-part Apple TV+ docuseries about Timberlake could explore the Super Bowl incident. Sources have also claimed Jackson may discuss the performance in the project.
Lukas told TMZ that producers did not ask him to participate in the reported docuseries. He said he nevertheless hopes Timberlake uses the project to address the controversy.
For now, Lukas’ comments offer a new account of one of pop culture’s most debated live-TV moments. Neither Jackson nor Timberlake has responded publicly to his latest claims.
