Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Martha Stewart’s Halloween costume, questioning her explanation after the outfit drew backlash online. The late-night host joked about wealthy celebrities getting “hammered” over their costumes in the aftermath of Halloween.
During an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the late-night host reacted to the lifestyle mogul’s decision to dress as an unhoused person for Halloween, complete with a cardboard sign reading, “I Am Hungry Help Me!!!”
“That’s how bad the economy is. Even Martha Stewart is homeless,” Kimmel joked.
Kimmel also noted that the since-deleted post’s caption made it even more ridiculous, which read “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween.” He then questioned how the lifestyle mogul ended up wearing the costume and sharing it online, joking, “This is how you know your assistant hates you.”
When Stewart initially defended the outfit by claiming it was meant to “bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness,” Kimmel was unimpressed, calling her explanation “strike two.”
He then advised viewers, “Don’t use your Halloween costume to raise awareness of anything other than Halloween, especially when you complete the look with a boyfriend sweater from The Row.”
Martha Stewart responds to the backlash with a second apology
Although Stewart deleted the original post, screenshots continued circulating online. She faced widespread criticism even after her initial response. Stewart then issued a second statement addressing the fallout, acknowledging that her earlier response did not adequately address the controversy.
Stewart wrote a direct apology in an Instagram post shared on Sunday. “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” the 85-year-old wrote. “My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”
While many criticized Stewart’s costume and post, some followers welcomed her apology and willingness to take responsibility.
