Matt Reeves’ Long-Delayed Remake of 72-Year-Old Horror Movie Finally Gains Momentum

The highly anticipated remake of a 1954 classic horror movie has received a major status update. Matt Reeves, who previously directed The Batman, is a producer on the project, which is currently taking shape at Warner Bros.

Michael Giacchino shares an update on Warner Bros.’ Them! remake

The remake of the classic horror movie Them! has received a new update from composer Michael Giacchino, who’s attached to helm the film. Speaking to ScreenRant, the Oscar winner revealed he, alongside the studio, is “still pushing it forward.”

He proceeded to underscore that the delay had been due to “the mergers” and scheduling conflicts. However, he assured that things were moving in the right direction. “Now that the dust is sort of settling, we’re re-getting into it, and my hope is that, yes, this is a movie that will get made and we’re doing the best we can,” Giacchino explained.

Notably, the original announcement about the remake came decades after the first feature. Giacchino, an accomplished composer who won his Oscar in the Best Original Score category for his work on the 2009 movie Up, joined the project as director.

According to ScreenRant, this was after the release of Werewolf by Night, the 2022 MCU TV special that Giacchino directed. Reeves joined the project in 2025. He and Giacchino are long-time collaborators. The latter has composed music for movies such as The Batman, The Batman: Part II, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes.

The original 1954 feature is widely regarded as one of the pioneering entries in the monster genre. Gordon Douglas directed the movie from a screenplay by Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes, who based it on a story by George Worthing Yates. James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, and Joan Weldon starred in that film.

As for Giacchino’s movie, its plot and cast remain unclear. Whether or not a separate screenwriter will be a part of the project is also not known. However, the latest update does offer some hope to the fans interested in the remake, which currently doesn’t have a release date.
