Buddy‘s wild success has ignited a new trend. Blumhouse is now following it with its next horror movie. The upcoming project will carry a very small production budget.
According to Deadline, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster with Focus Features has acquired the rights to Play House. It’s a horror film from Nicolas Curcio, an influencer, and this will be his debut feature. He co-wrote the story with his wife and creative partner Kirby Gladstein.
The reported budget won’t exceed $100,000. The plot will be similar to this year’s box office hit Buddy. Its theme is about a fictional children’s TV show. Play House will see the main character Elliott (Will Harrison) coming across VHS tapes of an unaired children’s TV show while trying to win back his ex. But the show ends up turning his life into a nightmare.
Blumhouse has a new horror movie out in theaters this weekend
Blumhouse’s latest horror movie, Other Mommy, is now playing in theaters. It features Jessica Chastain playing a supernatural entity haunting a young girl by taking her mother’s appearance. The actress also plays the girl’s real mother.
The film is based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House. Other Mommy’s ensemble cast also features Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen.
Rob Savage has directed from a script by Nathan Elston. Producers include James Wan. Michael Clear, Savage, Judson Scott, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis are serving as executive producers.
Blumhouse’s latest horror movie invoked curiosity with its promotional trailers. However, early reactions haven’t been positive. At the time of writing, Other Mommy holds an abysmal Tomatometer score of just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 34 reviews.
It has also received an underwhelming projection for its opening weekend. Made on a reported $19 million budget, Other Mommy is expected to collect only $20 million during the first domestic weekend.
