Princess Diana’s Brother Gave a 1-Word Answer on Her Life Without King Charles

Charles Spencer shared his thoughts on how Princess Diana’s life might have been different had she not married King Charles. The 9th Earl Spencer discussed Diana’s life and legacy while speaking about his new book, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.” During the conversation, he was asked what he believed Diana’s life would have been like outside the royal family. And he answered with a single word.

Charles Spencer has offered his view of how Princess Diana’s life might have unfolded had she never married King Charles. During a conversation with journalist Tina Brown, the 9th Earl Spencer was asked what he believed Diana’s life would have been like outside the British royal family. His answer was brief: “Happy.”

Spencer also discussed the difficulties faced by people who enter the monarchy through marriage rather than being born into it. “If you look at the wives of those who’ve married in, it’s tough. It’s a way of thinking that is very specific,” he explained.

The comments came during Spencer’s discussion with Brown at St. Peter’s Chelsea in New York City on September 29. Their conversation focused on his new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which examines Diana’s life and legacy. They also discussed her childhood, her marriage to then-Prince Charles and her death in a Paris car accident at the age of 36.

The discussion also brought up Spencer’s account of a phone conversation he said he had with then-Prince Charles before Diana’s funeral. In an excerpt from his book, Spencer recalled Charles allegedly telling him, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”

Buckingham Palace addressed the account through a spokesperson, saying, “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.”

However, Spencer maintained that he remembers his conversations with Charles clearly.
