Video Shows Golden Retriever Wanting to Play With Home Intruder

Sometimes a dog is just too much of a good boy. A golden retriever was caught on home security footage just wanting to play with an alleged burglar who had broke into a residence in San Diego. The homeowner watched the intruder on an app on his phone as his pooch presented toys to the stranger several times, not realizing that he could have been a danger. Thankfully, multiple officers soon arrived on the scene with the intruder still inside.

In early September, police responded to a report of a man who had broken into the home of Dante Rowley during the day in Sherman Heights, an urban neighborhood near the heart of San Diego, according to local outlet NBC 7. However, one of Rowley’s pets, a four-year-old, 90-pound golden retriever named Nash, was also caught on his Ring camera system not being a very good guard dog.

Video shows an unnamed adult male hopping over the white picket fence of Rowley’s home near the corner of 20th and J Street. He grabs a two-story ladder in a shed and uses it to climb up to an open window on the second floor.

Inside the home, the intruder is seen taking his shirt and shoes off, at times sitting on the floor on a mat in front of the main door and resting on a bench near the entrance. Security footage catches him eating a cup of yogurt, some slices of turkey, and some cheese from the refrigerator and even taking a nap in the middle of foyer.

Meanwhile, Nash watched the stranger walk around the place like he owned the place from under the kitchen table. The recording then catches the pooch wanting to play with the intruder, presenting the man with a red toy once and a stuffed animal twice. All three times, the stranger chose not to engage with the pooch.

“Nash is not the greatest guard dog,” Rowley admitted to the outlet. “We thought that he was going to be barking at people and he did the exact opposite.”

That said, Rowley was more concerned about the safety of his family’s pets, as he watched the intruder rifle through his home for about a half an hour. Nash was only one of the owner’s three dogs, another being a long-haired dachshund named Ollie. He said, “The dogs, we just wanted to make sure they were safe.”

Fortunately, multiple officers from the San Diego Police Department arrive on the scene, telling the suspect to come out of the home with his hands up. They carefully open the front door and head inside. But even at that moment, Nash is more interested in playing with the strangers. Instead of barking at the cops, he grabs the red toy with his mouth and trots over the officers to see if they want to play catch.

Undeterred, the officers realize that the intruder was attempting to flee the home by jumping out of a bathroom window on the first floor. Another camera catches the suspect in the middle of the back lot and holding his hands up as officers surround him. He complies with their orders and gets on his knees before being handcuffed and taken into custody.

Rowley says the suspect has been charged with burglary and that he had some outstanding charges that are unrelated to the incident. Still, he hopes that the alleged burglar is able to get his life back in order. He said, “We just hope that he gets some help.”

As for Nash, the outlet says the golden retriever is “still in the doghouse with Dante for his behavior.”
