Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the U.K. has reportedly added further strain to their already difficult relationship with Prince William. Royal experts say the Sussexes’ renewed presence in Britain could make the brothers’ ongoing tensions even more complicated.
The couple had previously moved to California after stepping back from their royal duties in 2020, making their latest return to the U.K. a notable development.

Prince Harry’s return to the U.K. is likely to put even more pressure on his rift with Prince William.
Royal historian Amanda Foreman tells People, “At the moment, it has gone from being a hot war to a very, very cold war. But in a cold war situation, you still have to turn up to the Olympics.”
While Prince Harry has sought reconciliation, Prince William and Princess Catherine have been tight-lipped. A close source has said, “It was very hard on them, and I wouldn’t blame William for being cautious.”
They are referring to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s move to California after stepping away from being working royals. During this time, the rift within the brothers was sustained by Prince Harry and his wife’s reliance on royal controversies to get them business deals. Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir “Spare’s” disclosures also did not help their relationship.
Royal author Simon Vigar says that Prince William and Princess Catherine are going by the royal mantra of “keep calm and carry on.” A royal historian tells People, “It has gone from being a hot war to a very, very cold war”
“William’s view is clear — any relationship his father has with Harry or the Sussexes as a family is entirely up to him,” says Russell Myers, author of William and Catherine. “But looking toward the future, he will have no relationship with them, in a working or private capacity whatsoever.”
Meanwhile, Prince Harry has managed to reunite his wife and children with King Charles earlier this year. Unfortunately, the brothers remain estranged.
