A crucial member of the royal household, senior equerry, reportedly quits his job with King Charles. As per multiple reports, several important royal aides have left their jobs at the royal palace. Notably, Sir Clive Alderton, the principal private secretary and most senior aide to the royal family, announced his retirement, sending shockwaves amongst fans. Now, within a month of this pertinent resignation, the monarch’s senior equerry, Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, has reportedly announced his desire to step down from his position.
King Charles’ royal team faces another senior staff departure
As per GB News, King Charles’ senior equerry, Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, has reportedly departed his job. As per the outlet, Thompson is expected to formally leave work by the end of the year after almost seven years. There is no further information on who will be recruited as his successor.
Thompson informed the royal household of his decision to quit. A palace spokesperson confirmed the news and stated: “Their Majesties were of course aware of this plan in advance, and I know they are most grateful to Jonny for his support over the past seven years and wish him all the best for the future.”
As per the outlet, the military veteran will continue working in the private sector. Notably, in 2018–2019, Thompson served as equerry at the late Queen Elizabeth’s annual residence in Balmoral. He also participated in the Queen’s funeral procession. In December 2019, he was hired as equerry to Prince William and Kate Middleton. Shortly after Charles took over the mantle of being the King, Thompson became the monarch’s equerry.
However, what is concerning is that Thompson is the third royal aide to quit his job. According to Royal Central, Robert Jobson, who is a royal author, said that the King’s loyal butler, Bernie Flanery, resigned from his position after four decades of service. Thompson is married to his PR executive partner, Olivia. The couple welcomed their daughter, Theodra, in May this year. Notably, Olivia’s father, Simon Lewis, was a former communications secretary to the late Queen.
