In a new Vanity Fair interview, Liz Meriwether confirmed that she has only recently started shaping the story. “I’m really at the beginning of the process,” Meriwether said. Still, she believes now offers the right cultural moment to revisit Spears’ life.
In particular, Meriwether pointed to changing attitudes about how the media treated famous women in the 1990s and early 2000s. She sees an opportunity to reconsider Spears’ story through a different lens.
The latest biopic update also indicates that development continues after earlier uncertainty. In July, the project moved forward with Meriwether joining as screenwriter.
Universal Pictures acquired the rights to Spears’ 2023 memoir The Woman in Me in 2024. Meanwhile, Jon M. Chu remains attached to direct, while Marc Platt will produce the Britney Spears film adaptation.
Spears herself first teased the project in 2024. At the time, she told fans that she was working on a “secret project” with Platt.
More recently, Meriwether has immersed herself in Spears’ music while developing the screenplay. According to People, she has also revisited the memoir and its audiobook narration by Michelle Williams.
Meriwether also said being close in age to Spears gives her another connection to the material. She remembers the same media era that shaped the singer’s rapid rise to global fame.
The project previously faced reports of development problems. However, the hiring of Meriwether and her latest comments indicate that work continues.
For now, Universal has not revealed the cast or release date. Still, Meriwether says she feels excited about finding the right way to retell Britney Spears’ story.
