Amy Winehouse’s Legacy Is Getting Another Hollywood-Style Makeover

Amy Winehouse’s musical legacy could reach a new audience through a West End production. The project is reportedly in development, with Broadway producer Catherine Schreiber attached and casting already underway.

An Amy Winehouse musical is reportedly being developed for London’s West End

Variety reports that the stage production is in the early stages. Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, who oversees her estate, may also be involved in the production.  One source described the project as “the worst kept secret in theater.”

The nature of the project and how it will incorporate Amy’s music remain unclear. Questions arise about whether the musical will narrate the story of Amy’s life like “Tina”, the Tina Turner musical. Alternatively, it could build an original storyline around her songs, much like Mamma Mia! does with ABBA’s music. No official title, cast, theatre, or premiere date has been announced.

Plans for an Amy Winehouse musical have been discussed for years. Mitch previously expressed hope that the musical would celebrate aspects of his daughter’s life beyond her struggles with substance use. He said, “We want to do something that remembers Amy for what she was, there’s so much more to her than just the drugs and the alcohol.”

Amy Winehouse died in July 2011 at the age of 27, leaving behind two studio albums: “Frank” and “Back to Black”. The latter became a career-defining success for the singer. Her musical legacy includes hits such as “Rehab,” “You Know I’m No Good,” and “Back to Black.” She won five Grammy Awards in 2008, including Record of the Year and Best New Artist.

The reported stage project follows the 2024 biopic Back to Black, which starred Marisa Abela and was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. The film received mixed reviews. The news also comes as Back to Black celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026. An expanded anniversary edition was released on October 23, 2026. It includes previously unreleased demos, rare B-sides, and a recording of Winehouse’s 2007 performance at Amsterdam’s Paradiso.
