Tom Cruise’s Days of Thunder Comeback Takes Sharp Turn Away From Nicole Kidman — Insider

The long-awaited Days of Thunder sequel has found its female lead. Anne Hathaway will star opposite Tom Cruise, while Nicole Kidman’s involvement has not materialized in the announced cast. The change is notable because earlier claims suggested Cruise wanted his ex-wife to return to the franchise. Now, the sequel appears to be moving forward with a completely different on-screen pairing.

Tom Cruise reportedly wanted Nicole Kidman involved as his ‘Days of Thunder’ co-star

According to earlier reports, Tom Cruise was interested in bringing Nicole Kidman back for the Days of Thunder sequel. The former couple first worked together on the 1990 racing drama. Kidman played Dr. Claire Lewicki, the love interest of Cruise’s Cole Trickle. The film also became an important early role in her international career.

At the time, an insider claimed there was still a possible place for Kidman in the story. The source suggested that even a brief appearance could have been considered. However, those reports never resulted in an official casting announcement.

Now, the sequel has taken a different direction. Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Anne Hathaway will star opposite Cruise, per PEOPLE. She will play a team owner and engineer, rather than Kidman’s original character. Meanwhile, Cruise will return as Cole Trickle, putting him back behind the wheel for the next chapter of the racing franchise.

The announcement also appears to close the door, at least for now, on the widely speculated Cruise-Kidman reunion. The two were married in 1990, the same year Days of Thunder was released, and later divorced in 2001. Their shared history has made the possibility of another on-screen pairing a particularly intriguing prospect for fans.

Still, Hathaway brings a different dynamic to the sequel. The new film will mark her first on-screen collaboration with Cruise. The pair have already begun promoting the project, with Paramount releasing an image of them together at Daytona International Speedway.

The sequel is also shaping up as another major legacy project for Cruise. Following the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, the actor and Paramount are once again revisiting one of his earlier hits. The new Days of Thunder is set to be filmed for IMAX and is scheduled to reach theaters on June 2, 2028.
