Batman v Superman: Origin of Wonder Woman Revealed?

We’re all pretty excited to see the first live-action movie version of Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (even though we still hate that silly title). But we still don’t know which version of Wonder Woman we’re going to get in the movie. Like many comic book heroes, Wonder Woman has had a variety of different origins, including one where she was made out of clay, and another where she was an Amazon princess who received her powers from the Greek pantheon of gods.

So which version of Diana are we going to see in Batman v Superman? Producer Charles Roven may have revealed the answer in a Q&A, part of which was captured in this Vine:

“She’s a demigod, Roven says. “Her father was Zeus.”

We’re hesitant to say flat out that this is Wonder Woman’s origin in the movie – since a Vine is by definition very short, and the one here leaves out the actual question Charles Roven was asked – but it certainly looks like he’s explaining Wonder Woman as he knows her, which would seem to imply that it’s the version he’s currently working with.

That origin is the current version from the DC comic book series, which was rebooted in the so-called “New 52” universe, which altered the origins of many of the publisher’s famous heroes. We can’t claim to be upset about it, since it’s at least as canonical as any other version of the character. Her mother in the comic book series was still Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons, which leaves room for much of her defining history – raised on an paradisal island of women, venturing into the world on her own – to remain intact. Assuming her mother is still Queen of the Amazons in the movie, and assuming – again – that this quote from Charles Roven is in the context we are led to believe in.

We expect to hear a little bit more about this topic soon, since DC and/or Warner Bros. may wish to comment on the validity of Roven’s statement (and, again-again, its context), but either way we’ll probably find out for certain when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2017.
