‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Will Be Shortened

If there’s one thing that Game of Thrones fans want, it’s more of their favorite show. If they had their way, there would be more than ten episodes each year. But what fans want, is not necessarily what they’re gonna get.

Back in April, Game of Thrones co-showrunner David Benioff indicated that there were only 13 episodes left in the series after season 6. And apparently that means we’re in for a split season with fewer episodes. Director Jack Bender was recently asked by Vanity Fair if he would return for the seventh season. He replied “I don’t know the answer to that. They’re only doing seven [episodes], and they’ve got their regulars who have done it forever.”

First off, they really should bring Bender back, as he did a terrific job on the last two episodes: “The Door” and “Blood of My Blood.” Second, it means that HBO is really gonna milk those final episodes and spread them out over the course of two seasons. If Bender is correct, that means seven episodes for season 7 in 2017, and only 6 episodes for the eighth and final season in 2018.

But then again, it’s not surprising. HBO did the same thing for the final season of The Sopranos, and it has become a common trick on TV as well. Syfy did it for Battlestar Galactica, and AMC recently followed their example with Breaking Bad and Mad Men. It’s just a business decision. Given how well Game of Thrones has done for the network, we’re sure that HBO would love to keep it around as long as possible.
