‘Game of Thrones’ Producers ‘Apologize’ For Last Sunday’s Episode

There are major spoilers ahead for last Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones! But if you’re a fan of the series and you still haven’t seen it yet…what are you doing reading this post?!

Game of Thrones has made a habit out of killing off its lead characters, but the most recent episode managed to shock everyone with the demise of Hodor, the beloved companion and protector of Bran Stark. The twist reportedly came from George R.R. Martin himself, as it was revealed that not only was Hodor destined to die to save Bran and Meera, the command to “hold the door” traveled back in time through Bran’s visions and left the boy formerly known as Wylis unable to say anything except the slurred version of that command: “Hodor.”

It was a heartbreaking moment. But everyone knows that the “hold the door” gag isn’t going to die anytime soon. That’s why the executive producers and showrunners of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and Dan Weiss participated in a skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in which they apologized…but not for killing Hodor.

It’s telling how popular the series has become, so much so that even Benioff and Weiss are celebrities thanks to the show. And to be sure, the TV series wouldn’t have worked without that duo. George R.R. Martin created that world and its characters, but it was Benioff and Weiss who successfully brought it to live-action. So all joking aside, they don’t owe anyone any apologies. But it was enjoyable to see them having some fun with it.

The next episode of Game of Thrones will premiere this Sunday on HBO.
