‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Will Premiere in July

“Winter is coming!” It’s not as if we couldn’t have known that, since HBO has been using the Stark family’s mantra for every season of Game of Thrones since 2011. But this year, winter is coming a lot later than usual.

HBO has announced that the seventh season of Game of Thrones will premiere on Sunday, July 16. That’s a week before San Diego Comic-Con, for those of you at home. Now, how do you think that HBO made that announcement? Standard press release? A talk show appearance with the cast? Or a bizarre Facebook live event which invited everyone to literally watch ice melt for about forty minutes before finally revealing the date? If you picked the last option, then you’re both insane and correct.

It’s truly one of the craziest promos that we’ve ever seen from HBO, but also one of the most misguided marketing moves in some time. This is the story of A Song of Ice and Fire. We get it, HBO. There’s no need to beat us over the head with the symbolism. Speaking of which, here’s a new trailer for the new season, which has absolutely no new footage.

Even the first poster for the new season is all about the fire and the ice.

So, there you have it. The penultimate season of Game of Thrones is coming on Sunday, July 16. But it may be a few more months before we actually see som footage from the new season.
