The People v. Gorilla Grodd Rumor Reveals Fan-Favorite Character Is Coming to James Gunn’s DCU

A new report suggests that DC Studios may have another unexpected character planned for The People v. Gorilla Grodd. The HBO Max series is already bringing several familiar DCU characters together around Jimmy Olsen’s investigation into Gorilla Grodd.

According to a report from Apocalyptic Horseman on X, Ambush Bug is set to appear in the upcoming series. The character, whose real name is Irwin Schwab, was created by Keith Giffen in 1982 and is known for his unusual sense of humor and ability to break the fourth wall. The report does not detail his role in the story.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd is an eight-episode comedy series from American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault. Skyler Gisondo returns as Jimmy Olsen, while Jimmy Tatro plays Gorilla Grodd. The story follows Olsen as he investigates whether Grodd was wrongly convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.

The rumored appearance connects the series to another corner of the DCU

Ambush Bug would be another addition to a series that already has several established DC characters. The cast includes Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, all reprising their roles from Superman.

Recent reports have also claimed that several members of the Justice Gang will appear. Murphy’s Multiverse reported that Maxwell Lord, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl are expected to feature, while a separate report from the outlet said Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho is joining the series as well. However, HBO Max has not officially confirmed any of those reported appearances.

James Gunn has confirmed that the series takes place after Man of Tomorrow within the DCU’s overall continuity, although its true-crime format allows the story to span different points in time.

The Ambush Bug report does not reveal whether the character will appear as Irwin Schwab or how he could fit into Jimmy’s investigation. For now, his reported involvement remains unconfirmed. The People v. Gorilla Grodd is currently in production in Atlanta, and the series does not yet have a premiere date.
