Royal fans react as King Charles meets Idris Elba

As reported by The Independent, the monarch and the English actor ran into each other at Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua on Monday, November 2. The encounter happened just after His Majesty placed an engraved stone on a wall at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Elba was also at the historic naval base for the One Commonwealth Night concert. He was there in his capacity as a goodwill ambassador for the King’s Trust.

They exchanged a handshake upon meeting as the 54-year-old asked, “How are you?” King Charles responded with “What are you doing here?” Elba joked, “I get around,” before checking in with, “How are you doing though, are you having a good time? Sorry about the prime minister.”

Fans quickly took to social media after footage of the friendly encounter went viral, focusing especially on the casual body language between the two. Royal fans immediately reacted on X, with one user asking, “Is it ok to slap the King of England on the arm?” Another user commented, “Idris Elba is genuinely a good guy. Like actually.” Others chimed in online to debate royal protocol, noting how rare it is to see someone interact with the monarch in such an easygoing, tactile manner.

As for the King and Elba, their connection goes back decades. When the actor was just 18 and dreaming of an acting career, he received a grant from the Prince’s Trust, now The King’s Trust, the charity Charles founded to support young people. That funding got him into the National Youth Music Theatre, paving the way for his breakout roles in “The Wire” and “Luther.” Their story has since come full circle. On June 2, 2026, King Charles made Elba a Knight Bachelor at Windsor Castle, giving him the formal title of Sir Idris Elba.
