King Charles’ upcoming royal birthday celebrations are making headlines, with reports pointing to significant security changes to the traditional parade. For those unfamiliar, the monarch celebrates two birthdays each year.
His actual birthday falls on November 14, while his official birthday is marked on the second Saturday of June with the annual Trooping the Colour military parade. This year’s celebrations could look different, as new security measures are reportedly being considered for the royal event.
Metropolitan Police plans raise concerns over ceremonial event protection
According to The Telegraph, the Metropolitan Police will reportedly scale back security arrangements for King Charles’ annual Trooping the Colour military parade. The force is expected to provide only basic protection for the royal ceremony and several other ceremonial events, with most security responsibilities reportedly being handed over to a private security company.
For context, the Met recently announced budget cuts that will come into effect next month. The move is expected to redirect more police officers towards frontline duties and general policing across the city.
A defense source told the outlet, “They are not supporting Trooping the Colour in the same way, nor many other events.” However, police sources have maintained that the Met will continue to offer full support at “nationally significant events.”
The force is reportedly expected to allocate security resources based on “where the threat, harm, and risk assessments justify it.” A Met spokesperson also explained that its primary focus remains frontline policing, arresting criminals, and keeping the city safe.
Meanwhile, Charles is currently touring the Caribbean alongside his wife, Queen Camilla. During one particularly awkward moment on the trip, the King appeared visibly frustrated as he stood in the rain waiting for royal aides to bring him an umbrella.
Charles and Camilla were attending celebrations marking Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th anniversary of independence at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on November 1. However, sudden rainfall briefly interrupted the festivities.
While the Queen was promptly handed an umbrella, Charles had to ask multiple times before receiving one of his own. Despite the awkward moment, the King and Camilla later appeared to take the incident in good spirits. The couple was seen laughing after taking their seats in the viewing area.
