After Professor X, Marvel May Have Found Its New Magneto – Report

After unveiling the X-Men cast at D23, Marvel Studios may now be zeroing in on its most iconic mutant villain. A new rumor points to a surprising frontrunner for the role of Magneto in the MCU’s upcoming X-Men film.

New X-Men rumor points us to potential Magneto casting

A new rumor suggests Morgan Spector could portray Magneto in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film. Scooper @CartierFilms first shared the report, which Marvel Updates then amplified on X (formerly Twitter).

Beyond this rumor, Spector currently stars as George Russell in HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age. He previously appeared in Homeland as a main cast member during its seventh season. His other credits include The Plot Against America, Boston Strangler, and the USA Network series Pearson.

Notably, the 46-year-old actor holds Jewish heritage on his father’s side. His paternal grandmother performed in New York’s Yiddish Theatre District. This background aligns with Magneto’s comic book origins as a Holocaust survivor.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios officially unveiled the X-Men cast at D23 in August 2026. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, while Kit Connor takes on Scott Summers/Cyclops. Christopher Abbott portrays Charles Xavier/Professor X, and Adam Driver plays the villain Nathaniel Milbury/Mister Sinister. Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd, Samara Weaving, and Asa Germann round out the announced lineup as Rogue, Storm, Emma Frost, and Angel respectively.

On the creative side, Jake Schreier directs the film after helming Thunderbolts* for the studio. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are rewriting Michael Lesslie’s original screenplay. Schreier confirmed in an August 2025 Empire interview that pre-production had already begun.

The film is set for a May 5, 2028 release as the forty-first MCU installment. It follows Avengers: Secret Wars on the franchise’s timeline. Kevin Feige previously told io9 the movie would feature a blend of familiar and brand-new characters. He also expressed enthusiasm about bringing the X-Men’s signature soap opera dynamics into the MCU. Magneto’s absence from the D23 lineup had already sparked fan speculation about a separate casting reveal.
